In a New Light: The Art Collection of Trinity College

Curator & Author

In 1996 while the Fine Arts Tutor at Trinity College, University of Melbourne I was engaged to curate an exhibition of its art collection to be held at the Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne and to write the accompanying exhibition catalogue for the College’s sesquicentenary in 1997.  At first, we thought it was just a matter of cataloguing and researching all the portraits in the dining hall and its contemporary art collection that formed the ER White Club.  This amounted to about 35 works, or so we estimated. We did not factor in all the works we would find during the project hidden throughout the College in offices, basements, the chapel vestry, cabinets and in one instance in a box in a forgotten stairwell.

Someone even posted in a rare group of nineteenth century netsuke that they had been looking after for thirty years lest they go missing.  The exhibition went ahead in 1997 but the catalogue project expanded and by 2000 we decided to draw a line and publish the work of a growing collection to date.  Since then the Collections at Trinity College have grown exponentially and the College has a dedicated curator and a beautiful gallery space to exhibit its expanded collection.
